Juniperus chinensis is commonly referred to as Chinese juniper within the English language. In the context of Korea, it is denoted as “Hyang-na-mu,” signifying a fragrant tree due to the pronounced scent emitted from its wooden portions, rendering it suitable for ceremonial incense purposes. Its historical significance stems from its applications as both perfumes and aromatic agents for air purification, a quality that conferred preciousness and value. Consequently, its usage found favor even within royal circles, with these trees still gracing the gardens of Changdeokgung Palace, one of Korea’s esteemed royal residences.
The wood of J. chinensis boasts a chemical composition including amentoflavone, hinoki flavone, apigenin, tannin, and phytoncide essential oil components. The volatile terpenes present in phytoncide represent a deliberate secretion by plants, designed to repel bacteria, fungi, and pests. Notably, J. chinensis has earned a reputation for its antimicrobial and deodorizing effects.
